Redesign of Hindenburgstraße – Ostfildern-Nellingen / Germany

The function of Hindenburgstraße as a shopping street was heavily dominated by its impact as a through road. The main objective of the project was to accommodate all road users and to upgrade the street into a “living room” that serves as a public space for all citizens. The downgrading of the street to a traffic-calmed business district based on the “Shared Space concept” was intended to serve this purpose. A targeted redesign of the street space supports compliance with the new speed limit. The redesign of Hindenburgstraße aimed to strengthen the street’s function as a main shopping street and to improve or ensure a traffic flow characterized by stop-and-go.
