The city of Stralsund is a Hanseatic city on the Baltic Sea that is more than 750 years old. Due to its significant urban planning and architectural heritage, it is now a UNESCO World Heritage city. However, at the time of German reunification, the city centre faced the risk of decay on the one hand and uncontrolled reconstruction on the other.
The City of Stralsund and the Government of the State of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern therefore commissioned the development of an integrated planning framework, ranging from urban development planning and master planning to the design by-law for the city centre. The task of ISA Internationales Stadtbauatelier was to contribute at all planning levels and, in particular, to represent the aspect of urban form—the three-dimensional appearance of the city and its building architecture.
