The heavily frequented and representative Bahnhofstraße in Esslingen, dating from the 19th century, provides a direct link between the railway station and the historic old town. It serves as an important shopping street and as a gateway into the city. The street was dominated by motor traffic. In recent decades, the attractiveness of the post-war development and the range of offerings steadily declined. It was therefore intended that, in future, it would invite people to stroll and linger as an urban promenade with a distinctive identity and unmistakable character, and as a shopping street. The aim is to achieve urban qualities such as a generous public realm, flexible diversity of uses, high-quality places to stay, rich experiences, and connections to the surrounding urban spaces. As a stage for public life, the street is to enable the staging of public space and enhance the urban experience.
