Project
The implementation of the town center bypass “Südtangente” in the city of Ellwangen created the opportunity to largely relieve the main traffic axis through the city center along Marienstraße / Spitalstraße / Obere Straße from individual traffic and to establish a “pedestrian zone” in conjunction with a “traffic-calmed commercial area.”
Essential aspects of the overall concept included design and spatial quality, integration into the historic fabric while respecting visual relationships and spatial sequences, quality of stay combined with maximum flexibility, as well as concepts for greenery, lighting, and the theme of water.
The planning objective was to create an urban promenade of distinctive identity and uniqueness; a shopping street that invites strolling, browsing, and lingering.
