Herrenberg’s town center has been preserved almost completely intact in its historic building fabric to this day and is therefore considered a protected ensemble from a heritage conservation and townscape perspective. To protect this historic and uniformly cohesive ensemble, a design code for the old town was adopted as early as 1985.

The revised design code aims to enable citizens to implement contemporary building designs without neglecting the identity of the old town. A key focus of the design code is on the design of ground floor zones. The main shopping street in the old town in particular is currently struggling with vacancies. The objective is to demonstrate possibilities for attractive design of entrance areas and advertising installations in order to enliven the public realm.
