The historic city of Lijiang is located on the edge of the Himalayas at an altitude of approximately 2,400 m in Yunnan Province. South of Lijiang lies the Yulong planning area, which is intended to accommodate 40,000 residents in the future. To do justice to the qualities of Lijiang, a New Town is to be created that incorporates Lijiang’s established structures and translates them into a contemporary language.
The planning is characterized by mixed use, compact and dense development, clearly defined and diverse spaces with changing orientations, and the staging of Wenbi Mountain and Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. The architecture is modern, inspired by traditional building methods, and follows specific architectural guidelines.
The basic design rule is based on the idea of establishing harmony between people and nature, earth and water, openness and enclosure, and aesthetic simplicity and diversity.
